Most important Latino-podcasting news of the week
La Opinión, a soon-to-be century-old Latino newspaper in LA owned by leading Hispanic information company Impremedia (just bought by My Code Media) launched a +-daily 10-minute podcast this week. News relevant to Hispanics living in the US ranging from politics, the entertainment industry, sports, health to anything affecting Latinos’ pockets will be published Monday to Friday. The focus and delivery of the first episodes suggest a different approach than that of El Washington Post.

The Politics of COVID-19, a Latino USA podcast from Futuro Media and PRX just launched today. Maria Hinojosa is joined by Ricardo Varela, Carlos Odio, and Tanzina Vega. They reflect on the last two years of the pandemic and, looking ahead to the midterms, talk about what can be expected from Latino and Latina voters.
Podium Podcasts launched a new website with 17 audio categories and +400 productions created by more than 25 different companies from Spain, Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

The biggest podcast player in and from Spain, iVoox, along with The Mediapro Studio, launch a new podcast. “Labs” aims to promote the content creators of the future. Podcasters, scriptwritters, producers and content creators in general will be able to submit fiction and non-fiction ideas until September 1st.

Newtral, a Spanish production company founded by journalist Ana Pastor, is going to produce podcast for Sonora, the new podcast venture launched by media group Atresmedia TV.

Colorado Public Radio´s new podcast ¿Quién are we? targets 30% of Denver´s population: Latinos. The podcast wants to show mundane stories and not focus on how Hispanics overcome adversity (they say the media is full of these stories). “Marginalized communities are too often portrayed in extremes” so this podcast aims to “reflect the shared experiences of a new generation of Latinos”.

Spotify´s video podcasting (exclusively through Anchor) is now available in 6 new countries, including Mexico, Spain, and Brazil. To be launched on July 19, “Bocas Ordinarias” will be the first Spotify Original with video.

The story of the “real James Bond”, who some say inspired Ian Fleming, is going to be launched July 27 on Stitcher and you can now listen to the trailer. Dominican playboy Rubirosa´s life will be the center of this 10-episode podcast created, produced and narrated by actor Christopher Rivas.
Latino USA, in collab with El Timpano, released “Undocumented and unhoused”. Renowned journalists María Hinojosa and Marta Martínez report on the reality Latinos in the Bay Area face.
Ice cream brand Breyers has partnered with Latinx Therapy to launch Conversaciones Vainilla – a program “to help encourage, inspire and facilitate meaningful conversations amongst Hispanic families”, with taboo topics still being a thing among generations. Seeing how the Latinx Therapy podcast is doing and that there hasn´t been a new episode in 3 months we are expecting a podcast from this partnership soon.
American Weekend Entertainment entered a multi-year syndication deal with reVolver Podcasts to distribute Music Daily news podcasts in Spanish and English.
The 69th edition of the Ondas Awards just published its rules for submission. Podcasts from all over the world can submit an entry to win the podcast award.

Impact on Latino podcasting
Mauricio Cabrera in last Sunday´s “The muffin” comments on Westwood´s recent study that shows how sports betting companies are the ideal advertiser on news and comedy podcasts. He points out how casinos and betting apps aren’t sponsoring or advertising any popular comedy podcasts from LatAm.
